The first permanent settlers arrived in Grundy County in 1831 and soon prospered because of
the plentiful water and timber. The county's natural resources, the coming of the railroads
and growing importance of the Illinois and Michigan Canal further aided population growth. By 1865, almost 13,000 people had settled
in Grundy County.
